HIV is treated but not cured by anti-retroviral therapy (ART) medications. These medications prevent the virus from replicating and this preserves the immune system from damage over time. When there isn’t enough virus present to be measured in the blood this is called “undetectable.” Being undectectable means you can’t pass the virus to another person and is a primary goal of treament. This is called Undetectable = Untransmittable (U=U)
Once daily pills such as Biktarvy or Dovato are the most common form of treatment but there are long-acting injectable medications available, too, such as Cabenuva. We are happy to dicuss your treatment options with you.
Undetectable equals untransmittable means that a person with an undetectable HIV viral load cannot pass the virus to another person. The Centers for Disease Control, World Health Organization, International AIDS Society, and the American Academy of HIV Medicine all endorse U=U as it is supported by dozens of studies of thousands of people over more than 20 years. Modern anti-retroviral therapies (ART) are highly effective at rapidly bringing down the HIV viral load to undectable levels and preserving and rebuilding the immune system over time. Most people diagnosed and living with HIV today will have normal lifespans and never develop AIDS if they remain in treatment and take ART as prescribed.
The most commonly used anti-retroviral treatments today have few side effects and they are generally mild. These can include fatigue, upset stomach, and headaches when you first start the medications but these resolve for most people after a few days to weeks.
